No Sala-brating Tonight After Shock Exit

Survivor New Zealand lost one of its most charismatic players tonight when honest-man Sala suffered defeat in a Redemption Island battle of memory recall.

The Youth Worker from Christchurch found himself fighting for redemption after suffering the games biggest Tribal Council blindside yet – a vote instigated by Auckland mum and dark horse, Barb.

Tonight’s duel was a simple memory test. Scattered in the arena were pairs of matching symbols. Each round, players were to select two tiles. If they match, they earn a point. First to five stays alive.

Unfortunately, Sala was unlucky from the get-go, turning over all tiles Mike needed to make pairs. Just like that, Mike won the duel and Sala’s shot at redemption was over.

After 25 days in the competition, Sala became the eighth person eliminated from Survivor New Zealand and the second member to sit on the Jury, alongside recent eliminee Lee.

Congratulating Mike with his signature bear hug, Sala then turned to his fellow Survivors to reflect on his time in the game.

“It’s not every day people pluck an Otara-born Samoan out of Aotearoa, chuck him in Central America to hook up with some random Kiwis and try to survive. I feel really blessed. I am proud to have stuck to who I am. I said I was going to play this game with honour, and I feel like I did that.”

As he threw his buff in the fire, Sala – gracious to the end – gave his love and respect to the remaining players, before leaving the arena to loud applause from those he now considered whanau.

Sala will remain in Nicaragua until the final Tribal Council on Day 39, where Lee, himself and five other eliminated Survivors – known as the Jury – will decide who becomes New Zealand’s first Sole Survivor.
