My Kitchen Rules New Zealand said goodbye to two more teams in an intense double elimination tonight.

Palmerston North Friends Lauren & Simon and Otago Mates Travis & Jeremy were the next duos sent packing from Kitchen HQ after their three-course meals failed to impress judges Ben Bayly, Gareth Stewart and the Tasting Panel.

Going into the kitchen all-guns-blazing the four teams: Jess & Stella, William & Zoe, Travis & Jeremy and Lauren & Simon, were determined to succeed knowing only two would be sent into the final People’s Choice Challenge.

But it was William & Zoe and Jess & Stella who left a strong impression on the judging panel. Gareth felt they ‘smashed it out of the park’ while Ben agreed “that was some of the best food we’ve had.”

Sadly, it was southern jokester lads Travis & Jeremy who had the shock-of-the-night when Gareth dished out a four for their meal. Compared to the eights and nines scored by other teams, the ‘Otago Mates’ stood no chance.

Scoring the lowest with 30 out of 60, it wasn’t all bad for the boys. Ben felt their beef cheek was “braised to perfection” and their ‘Cheeky Jafa’ dessert had Robert Oliver exclaim, “It’s the drag queen of desserts! It’s got that theatre and that fun and the name!”

Lauren & Simon’s menu had judges divided throughout their three courses. While their ravioli entrĂ©e and white chocolate mousse dessert won the judges over, it was their butter duck curry that had them questioning if the friends from Palmy had delivered a ‘competition dish’. “They could have jazzed it up a bit more,” said Nadia.

It was clear that both teams will be sorely missed in the kitchen. “You boys have bought a lot of fun factor to this competition,” confessed Ben, “we’re sad to see you go.”

“It’s been a great journey, right from the beginning,” replied Travis. “Obviously you learn a lot about food on the way but you also meet some great people and that’s been the best part about this whole journey,” added Jeremy.

For Lauren & Simon it was the “best experience ever” and while emotional during their goodbyes, made light of the situation by serving up a dose of parochial pride: “We’re just gutted to be beaten by Jafas,” joked Simon. “Yeah, we wanted to do it for Manawatu,” added Lauren.

Next week on MKR NZ, it’s back to school for the last People’s Choice Challenge where our top five teams cook a five-course degustation for a place in the semi-finals.
