Hawkes Bay high school teacher William Barnes has taken out the 2016 Mastermind Grand Final.

Tonight he went head to head against Auckland GP Julyan Lawry, Wellington Public Servant Jackie Owens and Dunedin ACC claims manager David Barnes.

William scored an impressive 10 points from the first round by returning to his initial Specialist Subject of American History in the 1960s. Needing six points to take the title, Barnes chose NZ Sport as his subject area and collected an impressive eight points.

Barnes says of his win “As a childhood fan of the show, it is a dream come true to share the title of Mastermind with such illustrious predecessors. Hard work, careful preparation and self-belief made the difference in three hotly contested episodes. To now be able to share the joy with my students, colleagues, friends and whanau will make this the experience of a lifetime.”

William will take home a bespoke trophy, titled ‘Ovoid’, by NZ artist Christine Cathie, as well as the famous Eames chair.
